Purpose of BostonGIS

BostonGIS is a testbed for GIS and Web Mapping solutions utilizing open source, freely available and/or open gis technologies. We will be using mostly Boston, Massachusetts data to provide mapping and spatial database examples.

OGC WMS OGC Web Mapping Service specification - an OGC WMS is a web service that produces maps and supports the various web methods as defined in the OGC WMS specification. The out put of a WMS is of the form PNG, GIF, JPEG, SVG and other graphical formats. OGC WMS takes requests in form or an HTTP GET OR POST. The basic web methods supported by an OGC WMS are GetCapabilities which lists all layers, the projections, extensts, and map formats supported. GetMap - which takes in list of layers, desired projection and extent and outputs a map in the requested format GetFeatureInfo - a web method supported only by queryable WMS and queryable layers within that.
